Pilanesberg National Park
Situated next to the glitzy Sun City Resort and Casino, you will find the Pilanesberg National Park with its unique geological features and rare rock types. Once the scene of volcanic eruptions some 1,300 million years ago, Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world and is fringed with rings of alkaline hills that rise up out of the plains. A unique geological experience, its position between the wet Lowlands and dry Kalahari also means that it has an unmatched variety of bird and animal species.
With 120 miles of tarred roads, self-drives are easy but guided tours are also available. Accommodation ranges from the wildly luxurious to campsites. Pilanesberg is an easy two-hour drive from Johannesburg via Rustenberg on the R565 and there are daily flights from Pilanesberg to Johannesburg.
