Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park
For a real game viewing treat, you may want to consider KwaZulu-Natal. KZN boasts an extraordinary network of nature reserves and game parks, with the most magnificent being Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, 180 miles north east of Durban. Once the hunting preserve of legendary Zulu king Shaka, it is now home to the Big Five and an impressive variety of wildlife such as cheetah, wild dog, hyena and giraffe. It is also a Mecca for bird lovers.
For accommodation you can’t beat the views from the award winning Hilltop Camp in the Hluhluwe section which is situated on the summit of a forested hill looking out to the distant sea 30 miles away. The camp has a restaurant, bar and shop as well as walks, talks and informative videos for visitors.
There is a wide selection of self-catering, luxury lodge and camping options throughout the park which should be booked in advance and be aware the December-February is the middle of the KZN hot, humid summer.
