Midlands Meander
The Midlands is a popular area in KwaZulu Natal. This warm and welcoming country experience has its humble beginnings in 1985, when a small group of crafters came together to create an art of craft route that holds the Creative groups of many persuasions, including writers, poets, photographers, artists and potters are attached to the Midlands region by the inspiring kaleidoscope of colour and natural beauty evident in the landscape. This has given rise to a thriving cottage industry route, the Midlands Meander, which offers great diversity, good value and excellent service at hundreds of farms, hotels, guest house, bed & breakfasts and spas, scattered along a well marked corridor.
In existence for over 20 years, this craft and leisure self-drive route has long been one of the countries most successful, attracting regular return visitors to its diversity and special atmosphere. Cheese farms with quaint goat’s towers, a mini-beer brewery, award winning pottery studios, butterfly research projects, colourful herbal centres and leatherworks all provide quality products made with a personal touch.
Hot air ballooning offers the exhilarating option of seeing the sights of the Midlands from a different viewpoint on high. Howick is a pleasant historical town close to Pietermaritzburg, which features the impressive 97m high Howick Falls. Nearby is a monument that marks the location at which Nelson Mandela was arrested prior to his imprisonment on Robben Island.
